Primary Care On Demand expands virtual care to all Rochester primary care patients

Primary Care On Demand is a flexible and convenient option for urgent symptoms and conditions such as sore throat, rash, cough, pink eye, upper respiratory infection, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, and more.
All primary care patients in the Rochester and Kasson practice areas now have year-round access to 24/7 care through the Primary Care On Demand mobile app.
This flexible and convenient option offers on-demand care for urgent symptoms and conditions such as sore throat, rash, cough, pink eye, upper respiratory infection, sinus infection, urinary tract infection, and more.
Through the Primary Care On Demand app, patients answer questions about their condition before choosing to move on to a video visit with a physician. Often, patients can connect with a physician in under 30 minutes, and most people wait less than 10 minutes for a video visit.
"Expanding Primary Care On Demand to our community patients means we can now offer the flexibility to connect with a physician from the comfort of home, ensuring patients receive the care they need without the barriers of travel or time constraints," says Jason A. Post, M.D., chair of Primary Care in Rochester and Kasson. "This service makes accessing quality care easier than ever before."
The Primary Care On Demand app has been downloaded thousands of times, and patient feedback on the service is generally positive. Primary Care On Demand is also available for all Mayo Clinic Health System patients.
When to use Primary Care On Demand
Patients can use this new service from anywhere in Minnesota, Wisconsin or Iowa.
Primary Care On Demand is also an ideal option when patients are away from home or don't have easy access to their local clinic. For example, if a patient lives in Minnesota but is traveling to either Wisconsin or Iowa, they can use the service. Similarly, out-of-town college students and young adult children can use this service if they need quick care for urgent symptoms.
Primary Care On Demand is available any time, day or night. This option is especially helpful when clinics are closed during evenings, weekends and holidays. It also comes in handy when same-day appointments fill up. The service is a convenient way for patients to get care for urgent issues without disrupting their school or work schedules. It may also be a good alternative for issues that don't need a trip to the Emergency Department.
"This service is a great option for immediate care when you're dealing with symptom-based issues," says Carlie Lovejoy, a nurse manager in Primary Care who has used Primary Care On Demand. "I'll continue to use it in the future for myself and my kids. It's the perfect option for quick and convenient care, whether it's in the middle of the night or during a quick break that works with your schedule."
Primary Care On Demand complements in-person care
Primary Care On Demand physicians are an extension of in-clinic primary care teams. They can review patients' Mayo Clinic health records and order any necessary labs or tests. They also can submit prescriptions to a preferred pharmacy and make referrals as necessary.
When Theresa Elwood, a nurse on the Midwest Virtual Care Team, used Primary Care On Demand for worsening upper respiratory symptoms, she appreciated that her physician had access to Plummer Chart to review her medical history and document visit notes.
"I was just so impressed with this resource," Elwood says. "And as a healthcare team member myself, I love that it frees up our providers to see patients with more serious conditions in the clinic and helps patients avoid the Emergency Department."
Since it's completely optional, patients can choose when and how to use Primary Care On Demand. This means patients can easily switch between in-person care with their primary care team and on-demand virtual care.
