In a Word: Adam Savage on making people smile, being a part of something good
This column spotlights the kinds of people you think about when you think about Mayo Clinic. They've answered questions, serious and otherwise, so you can know them better.
You see them at bedsides. Behind desks. You may spot them walking down a hall or sprinting across a lobby, making every effort to look like they're walking. You see them talking quietly with a patient and family, or sitting down with you at a meeting. They may be friends, teammates, or someone you know only by sight. But you're glad they're here. And it's reassuring to know that the health of our patients, our colleagues and the institution itself rests in their capable, friendly, earnest, caring and compassionate hands.
Adam Savage was looking for something more. He was working as a manager at Outback Steakhouse when he decided to make a career change and apply to work at Mayo Clinic. "I wanted to be a part of something good," says Savage, now an assistant pharmacy tech supervisor. He found what he was looking for in Mayo Clinic Pharmacy — a place where he's worked for nearly a decade.
Favorite part about working here: Patient interaction. Getting to meet all of the patients that experience our medical care.
If someone asked me to name my favorite things about Mayo Clinic: The culture and atmosphere.
The single most important thing I did at work yesterday (or expect to do tomorrow): Make somebody smile.
A book I'd recommend or one I want to read: "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters" by Meg Meeker. I received the greatest gift as a human, and that's becoming a father. My daughter doesn't know how much she has changed my life. Now it's my turn to return the favor.
Mayo Clinic has taught me: Everybody is fighting a battle.
Most treasured or best advice from a colleague at Mayo: "Do your job," quoting Bill Belichick.
Most memorable Mayo moment: Receiving a Karis Award. Or spilling coffee all over my table at New Employee Orientation.
If I could choose the "on hold" music for Mayo Clinic: "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King.
Favorite space on campus this month: The comfortable chairs by the piano in the entrance of the Francis Building.
People who inspire me: Compassionate, kind and caring people.
The most fun I've had at work this year: Working every day alongside the best pharmacy team I've ever been a part of.
Team Dr. Charlie or Team Dr. Will? Or Team Mother Alfred or Team Dr. W.W.? Team Chuck and Mother Al for no reason other than I enjoy nicknames.
When patients recall their visit to Mayo Clinic, I hope they remember: The wonderful people they got to encounter at their first, last and in-between steps throughout their medical care.
