Urology team scores victory in Arizona triathlon

Ready, set, go! On Oct. 7, Mayo Clinic's Arizona Medicine in Motion chapter — a group of nearly 50 physicians, residents, students and allied health professionals — participated in the fourth Annual Castle Creek Triathlon at Lake Pleasant.

The event was an interdepartmental competition, testing the strength, endurance and competitive spirit of Urology, Critical Care, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Radiology and Orthopedic Surgery teams. While members of each team displayed incredible athleticism and determination, Urology emerged victorious in the end.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to get outside, be active and spend time with co-workers outside of the hospital," says Maleah Roth, Critical Care Unit, who competed in the event. "I'm looking forward to a second annual triathlon — we need another chance to beat Urology."

The event was also supported by Medicine in Motion, the Mayo Fellows Association, the Joy and Wellness Taskforce, the Student Life and Well-Being Committee, and the Office of Wellness and Academic Support.

Florida colleagues celebrate fall with their families

Fun, games, food and local vendors drew a few thousand Mayo Clinic in Florida colleagues and their families to the second annual Family Fall Festival in Jacksonville on Oct. 14.

Held in Lot E6 under the solar panels, the event included a Trunk-or-Treat event, where plenty of candy found its way into the hands of the many costumed visitors.

The festival was organized by the Employee Well-Being and Mayo Clinic Experience teams to create a sense of community and inclusion at work and to thank staff for all their hard work.

Double take on the Daily Double

If you're a Jeopardy fan, you may have done a double take on a Daily Double clue during the Oct. 4 episode of the popular quiz show.

A clue read, "Development of the fighter pilot's G-suit is one of the breakthroughs from this clinic whose name sounds like a deli condiment."

The correct question was "What is Mayo Clinic?" — of course — but the fact that Mayo was mentioned on Jeopardy isn't necessarily surprising.

What made it more remarkable was the timing. The episode aired on Oct. 4, which fell into Heritage Days, Mayo's weeklong celebration of the organization's history and heritage. This year's focus was Mayo's highly confidential research during World War II, which resulted in the development of the G-suit, giving allied fighter pilots a decided advantage in the war.

The News Center team has reached out to Jeopardy to find out if the team was aware of Heritage Days at the time and scheduled the clue accordingly, or whether it was a coincidence. Until we hear back, share your thoughts in the comments.
